Maintaining a Feminine Spirituality

Recently I read a most interesting comment by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee: One of the difficulties confronting the contemporary wayfarer is that most texts describing the spiritual journey have been written by men and emphasize the masculine journey of renunciation...the ancient feminine mysteries embrace life and reveal its secret mysteries.

What Vaughan-Lee maintains is that in our spiritual journey we have both masculine and feminine qualities. When speaking about seeking goals or making sacrifices toward that goal, he is referring to the masculine side of spirituality. When talking about embracing the mystery within, he is referring to the feminine.

To forget the feminine side of our spirituality is to forget that inner life within each one of us. We need to hold on to the mystery unfolding within. It is important, as it will bring us to silence, contemplation and mysticism.

Such may be the sentiments behind the Good Shepherd psalm: Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side (23:4). To remember our feminine side of spirituality is to remember that we are not alone. We carry a presence within us that we should never forget, no matter what may be happening on the outside.

  1. Thank you for acknowledging the necessity of embracing our feminine spirituality and the necessity for going within. This is from my book, "Blessings From Mary" which includes 9 Feminine Principles and 365 Daily Sacred Feminine Meditations inspired by Mary Magdalene. There is an entire reading for the day, but I'll just share the quote,

  2. Thanks for sharing this, Sally. Mary Magdalene certainly exemplifies feminine spirituality. Think of the only complaint made against her in the gospel, that she wasn't doing anything. And Jesus reply? She is doing the one thing necessary...
