How far would you go for something you believe? I think that is a good question to ask ourselves on Monday of Holy Weekk. Sometimes it isn't so much what we believe, but how much we believe in it. Today's gospel (John 12:1-11) of Mary in an example. The symbolism of breaking the jar of precious ointment to pour over the feet of Jesus goes beyond extravagance. For Mary, the norm as not enough. She must get the best, even if it cost a whole year's wage (it was the custom of the time to anoint the feet of guests. Mary would not use just any ointment, but went beyond hospitality in choosing the absolute best available).
We never know when the spirit will call us forth to do something new, something outside our comfort zone. We are always free to choose. We can ignore the call, and continue on as though nothing had inspired us. Or we can step forth and act on it.
Let us not live our lives as though they were uninspired! Let us act when the invitation calls us forth to greatness. Let us break the jar that contains our spirit, and let that spirit be free to anoint life, that of others, that of ourselves. For in so doing, we in some mysterious way anoint the feet of Jesus.
